7 Steps to Prevent Cloth Diapers from Leaking!
There are 7 main steps to keep your cloth diapers from leaking and many of them are prevention before you even put the diaper on. For proper cloth diaper changes watch the videos in this blog!
The following steps are covered in the TikTok video at the end of this article as well.
Step 1 - Prep Your Diapers
Many cloth diapers need to be prepped before they will reach maximum absorbency (thus less chance of leakage). Prep your diapers according to the manufacturers directions and that will make a HUGE difference in how much pee can be absorbed.
Step 2 - Correct Diaper size
If your diaper is too big or too small it will likely leak. It needs to fit snugly around both the legs and waist (but not so tight it hurts) and be high enough on babies back and tummy it doesn't leak out the back. Also - check your diaper elastic, is it wearing out? (more about preventing that in a later step).
Step 3 - Use cloth diaper safe Rash Creams
The wrong diaper rash cream can lessen the absorbency of your diaper. Particularly diaper creams that are petrolium based or contain Zinc - being placed directly on diaper (or baby's bottom and then rubbing directly on diaper) can create a waterproof barrier on the diaper keeping it from absorbing liquid.
Either use Diaper liners like the ones linked here to keep the cream off of the actual diaper. OR use a cloth diaper safe bottom cream like, Esembly Rash relief or Mother love, or my personal favorite: Earth Mama
Step 4 - Use the proper amount of soaker pads
Whether you are using pocket diapers, AIO's, Pre-folds, or Flat you can add more absorbency. Purchase more absorbency and either line the inside of the diaper or add extra into the pocket. These inserts from Naturally Nature are nice because they have an added gusset. But there are many many options in everything from hemp, to cotton, to bamboo, search them here
Step 5 - Diaper Care
Not all detergents are made the same and fabric softener may make diapers softer BUT it makes them less absorbant!!! A few diaper safe detergents: Grovia mighty bubbles - made for cloth diapers, Esembly Washing powder - also echo friendly and baby safe. I personally use Biokleen Free & Clear and it seems to work great, is also natural, plant based, echo friendly and comes in bulk (huge plus for our family of 10).
ALSO - most covers CAN'T BE DRIED or you weaken the waterproof layer. Be sure to read the manufacturers instructions and follow them - it is one time that how you launder an item will actually affect the products usability.
Step 6 - Change Diaper more Frequently
This may seem like a silly step but if you've recently switched to cloth from disposable, cloth diapers do need to be changed a little more often (depending on the brand). Which leads us to step 7...
Step 7 - Diaper Quality
My favorite for heavy absorbency is the Kangacare Ecoposh they come with double 6 hour soakers and my baby wakes up after being in one all night with NO leakage. They are a little more spendy - but when it comes to cloth diapers, I have found you get what you pay for, they are not all created equal.
