There are only 2 items you absolutely NEED for a newborn.

Obviously there are lots of things you will need as baby grows. But if you plan to breast feed there are only 2 things you can't live without over the first couple weeks when you bring baby home from hospital.

The first is diapers.

I personally try and use mostly cloth diapers because they are better for both the environment and baby. Find my blog breaking down cloth diaper types, costs, and where to buy on my Cloth Diapering 101 Blog HERE. But disposables work as well

The Second is blankets.

You will be swaddling baby constantly those first couple of weeks anyways - if you have diapers and a half dozen or so receiving blankets to wrap baby in you can both survive.

What about a bed? If you can't afford it, find an old drawer or a box and line it with blankets or a pillow and set it by your bed. Baby will fit in there for at least 2 months. Which is plenty of time to find and buy a crib and other things you need.

Some other great tips on how to house baby on a budget:

  1. Search facebook market place, garage sales, and Craigslist for gently used baby items. Double check safety regulations and recalls before purchasing - but this is a great way to get items much, much cheaper (and sometimes free).
  2. Ask your friends and family! Any of them have a crib sitting in their garage that they may just want to get rid of or be willing to borrow? Doesn't hurt to ask!
  3. Refurbish and old crib and/or old furniture from estate sales to make your nursery look you want.
