If you are thinking about using cloth diapers for your little one a simple online search can be overwhelming. The videos and descriptions below provide insight on the basic options that are available - how to use each and the base investment that will be needed for each type of diaper.

  • prefolds,
  • flat diapers,

I've created a series of informational tiktok videos (also found below) that cover 2 topics each. Along with purchase links for everything on Amazon. Find my link list of everything covered below HERE

Fitted Diapers & All-In-Ones (AIO)

Will start with my favorite method - which is both the easiest and most expensive: Fitted one size diapers. Both fitted diapers and All-in-ones (AIO diapers) look like a disposable diaper in shape. They have either velcro or snaps as closures, and fitted gussets around the legs to help prevent leakage. Most come as a 'one size' so diaper grows with baby.

The difference between a fitted diaper (some times called a one size or pocket diaper) and an AIO (also referred to as a pocket diaper at times) is that the fitted diaper needs a cover and the AIO has the waterproof cover attached. I prefer the fitted because they dry more quickly and the covers can be used for multiple changes - where the AIO are washed every time and most have to hang to dry.

Pocket diaper: a diaper with a pocket where extra absorbency (soaker pads) can be added inside diaper to soak up more pee.

When it comes to cloth diapers you get what you pay for. Below are a few different brands of fitted diapers and all in ones with links and costs. But I think the Kangacare ecoposh OBV (organic bamboo velour) are the best. They go from 6-35 pounds. They have a double leg gusset that helps prevent leakage. The quality of the diaper is amazing. They soak up so much more pee, so each diaper last longer than most of the other's listed. And the organic bamboo velour is incredibly soft on baby's skin. They also offer a newborn size - but I think the one size is sufficient.

Nora's nursery are also nice - but I would order extra soaker pads as the one they send is not enough. Also they advertise as organic bamboo but that is only the cover of the soaker pad - the interior is mostly polyester.

Grovia - I've only used their hybrid - but they offer an all-in-one: Grovia ONE. If you are buying their inserts, I suggest the 100% organic cotton over the no-prep because they don't hold onto smells.

Fitted & All-In-One diapers:

Base investment for 24 diapers & covers approx. $600 - $1000 depending on brand & method

Flat Diapers & Pre-folds

Flat diapers are the most economical option with pre-folds being a close second when it comes to low investment. I love pre-folds - flat diapers I use when I'm out of everything else.

Both come in a variety of materials from bleached cotton to unbleached cotton to bamboo & hemp. I prefer bamboo and hemp in the diapers I use because they have natural antibacterial properties and they are a more sustainable product PLUS they are more absorbent.

Both have to be folded and secured with pins or fasteners and will need a waterproof cover over them.

Pre-folds have a triple layer of fabric stitched down the middle. They come in one size or in sizes 1-4. I love  both the Grovia organic bamboo prefolds, and the Kangacare organic bamboo prefolds in specific sizes over single size cotton pre-folds I've tried from other brands..

This TikTok video walks through Flat and pre-fold diapers.

Flat Diapers:

Base investment approx. $145

Pre-fold Diapers:

Base investment for 3 sizes approx. $550 (can be spread out as baby grows)

Hybrid Diapering

Hybrid diapering is a mixture of methods and my favorite covers for this are the GroVia Hybrid covers & inserts. These can be used with their snap in inserts, flat diapers, pre-folds, and fitted diapers. So with this method you can purchase a bulk of the cheaper diapers but slowly grow your OBV fitted collection if that is what you prefer most.

Easily get started by purchasing one of the GroVia hybrid packs - I prefer the organic soaker pads over the no-prep because they don't hold in smells!! The TikTok video below walks through Hybrid diapering and basic diaper care.
