Science Experiements with Five Kids - Groovy Lab in a Box

As a home schooling mother, over the years I have purchased, many, many, cool science books filled with science projects.....that I rarely got around to purchasing materials for. So the books got dusty and the projects were never completed.

You can see my kids excitement as they work on this Groovy Lab from Educents

Recently, however, I stumbled across the coolest science kits from EduCents online educational shop. They are called Groovy Lab in a Box. We tried two: 'Stich a Circuit' and 'Blowing in The Wind'. They were so much fun, and I'm going to tell you why, but first - here are the facts.

  • Each box has multiple experiments, beginning with simple and slowly getting a little more complex. At the end your children create their own lab with no instructions, but with the knowledge they gained while completing the other labs.
  • All the materials you need are in the kit, aside from a pencil/pen & scissors
  • The entire box takes between 8-10 hours to complete DON'T BE AFRAID - It's perfect for a one week study on a subject. You do a different lab each day of the week, and on Thursday/Friday, your children complete one on their own.
  • You can purchase a 1 month, 3 month, 6 month, or 12 month subscription and receive a different Groovy Box every month.

Now onto the fun stuff. The Stitch a Circuit was all about electrical flow. My kids learned so much, and were completely in awe when they created several different 'light up' labs. You would have thought it was magic by the look on their faces, when a flashlight they made with a popsicle stick, watch battery, bull dog clip, some wire, tape, and copper, turned off and on. And that was just the first lab. I think the smiley face may have been their favorite in the electric box.
Our son goofs around with the smiley face (it's eyes light up) sending them into giggles.

Next we tried out the 'Blowing in The Wind' Groovy Lab in a Box. I'm not gonna lie, this box sounded boring to me, but one of our kids picked it so I agreed to try it out. Well......turns out he has better taste than I do, because we learned equally as much with this box. Also the kids enjoyed this box so incredibly much.

It starts off with a series of simple experiments moving small objects with air. And then the kids get to race, and compete to hit a target.

After a few more experiments where they try out different windmill styles, they had to create a windmill on their own that would lift pennies in a cup when wind moved the windmill. They successfully created a windmill that lifted several things with them simply blowing on the it. And were so proud of themselves.
Another great resource that comes along with these kits is the online information portal. The booklet already does a lot of teaching, so we chose not to utilize the online resources this time. But we definitely plan to check them out on future boxes.
