Graves 8 Carve Pumpkins With Their Cousins

We visited the Airlie Hills Pumpkin Patch in Monmouth, Oregon this year and the kids had a blast. Learn more about our pumpkin patch trip in another blog here.

After a day of fun at the patch we stretched a giant tarp out in the yard and the kids carved pumpkins. We usually do them inside, but it was  nice day and cleaning up pumpkin mess from a tarp in the yard was so much easier than what we normally have to clean up in our dinning room.

kids clean out their pumpkins outside & the mess is easier to clean up

The kids all chose different types of pumpkins; different colors, shapes and sizes. It was interesting to see how the insides of each pumpkin type was different. The small green/blue pumpkins were so hard & thick and difficult to clean out.  The larger ones had less seeds, and were less dense.

Some of the pumpkins are harder to clean than others

Being that the pumpkin carving was an impromptu event, we had not planned any school curriculum around it. But still did our best to observe while cutting and cleaning.

My sister and brother-in-law joined us for the day, and brought over two fun carving kits (link below). They were much easier to use than kits I remember sampling in the past. They had safe knifes and pattern pages where you punched out the black, traced the pattern onto the pumpkin and cut. The results were fabulous.

We are not a family that has always celebrated Halloween. We typically lean more towards harvest parties and fall themes. But as I get older, and have more kids, the more lenient I have become. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, who knows. If you aren't one for Halloween traditions, below is a fun way to incorporate pumpkin carving into your fall season with a faith based message

But I do know that my children are lovely positive little creative souls, and that is something I never want to stifle with silly rules. (as long as they are safe)

Their final results were great. Some used patterns from a fun book - and they were easy enough to do with out parents help

Carve out some time to watch the video below as we clean, cut, and create some beautiful jack-o-lanterns.
